Protective Packaging are delighted to announce a new sponsorship for the forthcoming rugby season. A recent press release from Fylde RFC is detailed below. We wish Liam lots of success in his new signing.
Fylde RFC is delighted to announce that prop forward Liam Launders has signed for the Club ahead of next season’s National One campaign. The 22 year old, 6’2” & 18st Bury-born player has joined the Club following two seasons at Hawick RFC and 2014/15 at Edinburgh Academicals in the Scottish Premiership. Prior to that he was at Preston Grasshoppers, Myerscough College and Bury RUFC where he took up rugby at the age of 14. He is a graduate of Myerscough’s Rugby Academy & FdA Rugby Coaching degree programme and was a member of the College’s 1st team squad that won the AASE Plate, BCS Elite Cup & BCS Elite League title.
He moved to Scotland ahead of the 2012/13 season and was part of the Hawick squad that was promoted to the Scottish Premiership at the end of that season, coached by the former Sale Sharks’ Phil Leck. He was an integral part of the Premiership squad in 2013/14 and won the ‘supporters’ player of the season’ accolade before moving with Leck to Edinburgh Academicals for the current season.
Now back living in Bury, we caught up with him at a training session at the Woodlands this week.
Q: How do you look back on three seasons in Scottish League & Premiership rugby?
LL: It was a huge learning curve for me and I have gained masses of experience playing against the best Scotland has to offer.
Q: Who have been your biggest influences in rugby?
LL: Firstly Nick Price at Bury RUFC who got me to start playing rugby when I was 14. Then Rod Murray, David Kidd and Donny Sutherland who helped me develop massively whilst at Myerscough College; Phil Leck for the opportunity of playing in the Scottish Premiership and for the amount of coaching time he has invested in me. I cant thank them all enough!
Q: Do you know any other members of the Fylde squad?
LL: I know Tom Burtonwood, Danny Maher and Ralph Dowds having played with them at Myerscough. And I have previously done some coaching work with Arnie.
Q: What do you feel about joining Fylde?
LL: I’m really excited about the opportunity of playing for Lancashire’s biggest club! Furthermore, I’m looking forward to playing in a side which plays such an attractive style of rugby. I have thoroughly enjoyed training with the lads so far and I can’t wait for the new season to begin in September. I’m hoping to be sponsored by the Sale-based leading designer and manufacturer of climatic packaging solutions, Protective Packaging Ltd, and this will be a big help.
Fylde Head Coach Paul Arnold said: Liam is a big, powerful ambitious young prop who we are very pleased to have signed. He’s a Lancashire lad who has been playing at a decent level in Scotland & is keen to push on with his rugby career. He’s already training with us & doesn’t look out of place one bit. I’m looking forward to watching him in the derby against Preston Grasshoppers on Good Friday.
